An interesting footnote in rim design... and a style which did not seem to last for very long... perhaps the victim of modern aerodynamic rim profile trends.
Not sure of the age of this pair (they are new) which I just pulled out of storage. I have never owned a wheel built with these. But, the potential for increased strength with this design makes sense to me.
These have straight interior walls (not hooked). The spoke holes are inside a deep channel only 8.5 mm. wide at the base. Weight of each rim is 525 grams. 14 mm. between the interior walls and 20 mm. outside width with parallel sides. Silver anodized finish. 36 spoke holes with single eyelets and drilled for presta valves.
Shot for the "Rim Light" theme for the Strobist Sundays group. This was my grandfather's bowler hat, and to give you an idea of its age, there is a piece of newspaper folded up and tucked into the band around the inside (presumably to tighen up a loose fit). The date on the newspaper is 1927.
Strobist: Alien Bees B1600 with 30° grid at full power aimed at the hat from the 11:00 position; White bounce cards at 4:00 and underneath the hat; Alien Bees B800 with 10° grid at 1/4 power aimed from 3:00.
